David’s phone rang. He looked at the caller ID. Maxine again. They were having an unprecedented number of conversations, but he genuinely felt like he wanted to talk to her.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hello, David. I got the flowers. They’re amazing. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“How’s work?” Her voice held a twinge of excitement, but also the slight sense of angst, as though David might end the call any moment.

“We had quite a bit of trauma this week, but I think we did some good.”

“And Mica?”

“She’s good. I really like Mica. I plan to see her again.”

After she hopefully survives taking down a black belt.

“What is it that you like about Mica?”

“She’s honest. She’s tough. She wants more—wants better for herself and for the world.”

She’s not burned out like me.

He added, “She has this contagious energy. I saw her in action the other night. She’s incredible.”

“She brought you into a dangerous situation?”

David had already mentioned the street fight to his mom, but during that conversation he hadn’t implied he’d seen it firsthand. “It wasn’t her fault, Mom. Some thugs tried to steal my car. She defended us. She’s an incredible fighter.”

And I was only there because I pressured her to let me come.

“How many?”

“How many?”

“How many men did she take down?”

“Five.”

Maxine fell silent again.

“I told you she used to be an FBI agent. Well, it turns out they tied her hands during an assignment. She got shot. After that, she didn’t want any part of their stranglehold rules.”

“So, basically, she got shot and quit,” Maxine stated.

Ah. Mom has investigated.

David wondered what administrative report his mom had gotten her hands on—and how much of the story it actually revealed. Maxine had been shot, too; but she hadn’t quit. Was she trying to pass judgment on Mica?

“She quit because they put her in a situation where she didn’t have control over the outcome. She’s certainly not a coward. Mica didn’t hesitate, or cower, or give an inch to the men she fought.”

Unlike me. I was ready to give them what they wanted and run.

“Bounty hunting.”

“She prefers the term ‘fugitive recovery agent.’ I think she likes the autonomy of self-employment, but wants something more than picking up petty criminals.”

“Dangers in her life can bleed into yours.”

He already knew that first hand. “It’s just dating.”

So far just a date.

“Besides, my performance lacked bravado. She may already be conspiring to be rid of me.” Even as David said the words, he recalled nothing of disapproval or reproach in Mica's tone or expression.

“Knowing what she does, you still like her?”

“I do. I don’t think she’ll stay a bounty hunter, but I imagine she’ll always want to fight the good fight.”

“Be careful.”
